Students have heard the phrase, “money doesn’t grow on trees” a thousand times before, but in a practical sense, where and how can they learn solid personal money management skills? From the origins of money to the ins and outs of investing, JA Dollars with Sense can equip today’s youth with the knowledge and tools they need to make sound financial decisions for their future.

JA Dollars with Sense is designed to help students in Grade 8 understand personal financial management concepts, and to begin to see how they can be applied in their own life starting now! Through a series of interactive lessons, students gain the skills and confidence needed to start making informed decisions about their money and the future.

The key concepts covered in the one day program include:

  • Linking future goals and success to proactive financial planning

  • Identifying the advantages and disadvantages of different forms of money

  • Discovering compound interest and understanding its benefits

  • Distinguishing different investment vehicles and the advantages and disadvantages of each

  • Exploring the idea of investing to suit your personality and needs

With credit so easily available and the media’s bombardment of advertising to “BUY! BUY! BUY!”, it is easy to get in financial trouble. With a little bit of encouragement, the right education, and advice from someone that’s been there, we can help today’s youth be smarter with money. That is a good return on investment!

INVESTING IN OUR YOUTH

Your participation as a teacher or volunteer is important, appreciated, and lasting. The total amount of time required for this program is approximately 6-8 hours, which includes training and preparation. The actual program is delivered as a one day in-school conference in 5 or 6 one and a half hour sessions.

JABC will provide you with everything you need to be successful including:

Program training and coaching for every volunteer. Program managers will walk you through the materials so you are prepared and confident to meet your class. They will also give you tips on what to expect from your experience.

Professionally developed classroom materials including student workbooks, program guides, and visuals (posters, transparencies etc.). Students are encouraged to keep their workbooks for future reference.

Program logistics and coordination. Program managers will liaise with the school to set up the one day program. They will assign 2 volunteers for every classroom and set the agenda for the day. Teachers and volunteers simply arrive prepared to present.
