BC Student wins National JA Award

May 06, 2010 - Vancouver, BC, - Junior Achievement of British Columbia (JABC) is pleased to announce JA student Natalie Lau from Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School in Vancouver has won the national Deloitte Inspiration Award. One of four students from across Canada to be honoured this year, Natalie will receive a $2500 scholarship and the opportunity to speak at Junior Achievement of Canada’s Business Hall of Fame Gala on May 11 in Toronto. The event draws more than 800 business leaders from across the country.

“It’s an honour to receive the Deloitte Inspiration Award and be able to represent the west coast of Canada,” said Natalie, “I would also like to thank Junior Achievement for giving me the opportunity to create, run and liquidate a company, but in reality, it was more than that – I was given the chance to start my journey to becoming a leader.”

Natalie is a participant of JA’s Company Program – A Student Venture. The program inspires high school students to understand the role of business in our society by creating an enterprise of their own. By consulting with volunteer business professionals to design, organize and operate a real business, students experience how a small enterprise functions.

“We are very proud of Natalie and what she has accomplished as a JA student,” said Jan Bell-Irving, President of JABC, “This award is a testament to the great work JA is doing in communities across British Columbia.”

The Deloitte Inspiration Award was created to recognize outstanding written and oral communication skills of Achievers from JA’s high school programs. To be eligible for the award and scholarship, students must prepare a 3-5 minute (500 word) speech and film themselves delivering it.
